This is just the first book in the series that hooks you from the beginning. It is non-stop action, romance, and mystery in multiple universes. It leaves you needing more!
I read this book when I was on a business trip and I found this book to be a great, casual read--kind of like a warm cup of tea and a cozy chair for the mind. In other words, it's not pretentious like so many other fantasy fiction books. It's something I could read to escape and put the cares of the day aside.
The story is interesting and a little different than most, but still has enough familiar fantasy elements to make it comfortable for most readers. There are a variety of characters and a few mysteries, giving the story many facets. It's interesting to watch the main character, Cindra, mature as events in the book force her to grow up fast.
This is the first in a series, so there are a lot of questions left unanswered, but in the good sort of way that leaves you wanting more. One nice little touch to the book are the drawings at the beginning of each chapter.

Good intro to the series with enough going on to keep your interest, I bought the second one immediately after finishing this one.
This is a really fun series and I recommend reading them all. They are not stand alone novels, the author seems to have written these books with the intention that each book builds on the other and continues a particular story line, but in a way that adds to the world and fills it instead of unnecessarily complicating it. Although intended for the YA audience any lover of fantasy fiction should appreciate the well thought out magic system, the empowered heroes, the deep history, and the build up of subtle interplay between the celestial and the mundane.
